Why Is Thick Paper Difficult to Slit at High Speed on a Paper Slitting Machine?

2026.09.17 27

Thick paper is not always difficult to slit.

At a lower speed, many paper slitting machines can handle it without much trouble. The problem often starts when production speed goes up.

The paper becomes harder to control. Cutting edges may not be as clean as expected. More paper dust can appear, and the finished rolls may become less stable.

So what changes when you run thick paper at high speed?

Thick Paper Needs More Control During Slitting

Compared with thin paper, thick paper and board have greater stiffness. This affects how the material behaves as it passes through the paper slitting machine.

During the slitting process, the paper needs to move smoothly through the machine while the slitting knives make a clean and continuous cut.

At the same time, the cut rolls are being rewound. That means the result is not determined by the knife alone.

The slitting knife, paper tension, running speed and rewinding process all affect the final roll.

When these parts are properly matched, thick paper can run smoothly at production speed. When they are not, problems usually become more noticeable as the speed increases.

Why Does Higher Speed Make the Problem Worse?

At higher speed, the paper passes through the paper slitter much faster.

There is less room for unstable tension, incorrect knife adjustment or poor rewinding conditions.

For example, a knife setting that works well at a lower speed may not give the same cutting quality when the machine speed increases.

The same applies to tension control.

If the tension is too high, the paper can be affected during rewinding. If it is too low, the finished rolls may not be tight and stable enough.

This is why maximum machine speed is not the only number that matters.

For a real production line, what matters is whether the machine can maintain stable running, clean slitting and consistent finished rolls at the required speed.

The Cutting Knife Is Important — But It Is Not Everything

When the edge of a slit roll is rough, checking the slitting knife is an obvious place to start.

Knife condition and knife adjustment are important, but the paper itself also matters.

Paper GSM, thickness, roll width, finished roll width and required production speed all affect the slitting process.

The rewinding condition matters too.

This is particularly important when processing thick paper, coated paper, card stock or board.

A paper slitting machine needs to be set according to the material being processed, not simply according to its maximum rated speed.

What Should You Check Before Slitting Thick Paper?

If you are planning to run thick paper on a paper slitting and rewinding machine, several basic parameters should be clear first:

  • Paper type and GSM

  • Paper thickness

  • Parent roll width

  • Parent roll diameter

  • Finished roll width

  • Finished roll diameter

  • Required running speed

  • Required cutting quality

These details help determine the appropriate slitting knife configuration, tension settings and rewinding conditions.

There is no single setup that is suitable for every type of paper.

The machine needs to match the actual material and finished roll requirements.

Speed Is Only Part of the Production

A paper slitter running at high speed may look impressive on the machine screen.

But in production, speed is only useful when the paper stays under control.

If the cutting edge becomes poor, the finished rolls are unstable, or the operator has to reduce the speed to maintain quality, the actual production result is very different from the maximum machine speed.

For thick paper slitting, the focus should be on the whole process:

Stable feeding → controlled tension → clean slitting → stable rewinding

This is where the configuration of the paper slitting machine makes a difference.

CHM develops paper converting equipment for different paper and board applications, with machine configuration selected according to the customer's material, roll sizes and production requirements.

If you are working with thick paper or board and having problems with slitting quality, running speed or finished rolls, send us your paper GSM, thickness, parent roll size, finished roll size and required speed.

Let's look at the actual application first.
