Paper Slitting: Why Different Papers Need Different Cutting Solutions?

Paper slitting looks simple from the outside. A roll goes in, the knives cut it, and finished rolls come out.

In real production, it is rarely that simple.

Different papers behave very differently during slitting. Paper weight, coating, surface finish, moisture, stiffness 

and even static electricity can all affect the final result. A machine that performs well on one material may need 

a completely different setup for another.

Understanding the paper first is often the best place to start.

1. Coated Paper: Surface Quality Matters

    Coated papers, including gloss, matte and art papers, are widely used for magazines, brochures, commercial printing and 

premium packaging.

    Their smooth surfaces look good, but they can also be more sensitive during processing.

    Poor tension control may cause tracking problems. Excessive contact with rollers can leave marks or scratches, while unsuitable 

knives may create rough edges or paper dust.

    For these materials, stable web tension, accurate guiding and clean cutting are important.

2. Kraft Paper: Strong Paper, Different Challenges

    Kraft paper is everywhere in packaging — shopping bags, food packaging, wrapping paper and corrugated applications.

    It is strong and flexible, but that does not mean it is easy to process.

    At higher speeds, poor tension or unstable feeding can lead to wandering, uneven cutting and rough edges. For converters 

handling heavier kraft paper, machine stability becomes especially important.

    CHM sheeting and slitting equipment can be configured for different kraft paper grades and production requirements. 

    The goal is not simply to cut faster, but to keep the paper under control throughout the process.

    For example, the CHM-1400 is used for roll-to-sheet applications where customers need stable feeding, a

ccurate cutting and continuous production.

3. White Cardboard and Heavy Board: Cutting Force Matters

    Heavy paperboard is common in cartons, gift boxes, cigarette packaging, electronics packaging and other applications 

where appearance and stiffness matter.

    With thicker materials, cutting becomes more demanding.

    If the cutting system is not properly matched to the material, the edge may become rough, the sheet may deform, or the 

cut may not be clean enough for the next printing or converting process.

    For heavier board applications, CHM offers twin-knife sheeting solutions, including the CHM-SGT series.

    The dual rotary knife system is designed for heavier materials and demanding production conditions. In actual production testing, 

    CHM machines are tested with different paper grades before delivery so that customers can confirm the cutting result with their own material.

    That step is important.

    A specification sheet can tell you the machine's maximum range. A real test tells you whether the machine is right for your paper.

4. Thin Paper: Tension Becomes Critical

    Writing paper, copy paper, lightweight packaging paper and other thin materials can behave very differently from heavy board.

    They are more easily affected by tension changes, air movement and static electricity.

    Too much tension can stretch the paper. Too little tension can cause wrinkles or unstable feeding. In dry environments, static can 

make sheets stick together and affect stacking.

    For these applications, stable web control and proper static management are just as important as the cutting knives.

    CHM paper sheeting machines can be configured according to paper weight, width, production speed and the customer's final sheet requirements.

5. Paper Is Not the Only Material

    Some paper converting factories also process film, laminated materials and other flexible substrates.

    These materials bring additional challenges, especially static electricity, surface scratching and material tracking.

    The smoother and more insulating the material, the easier it can be for static charge to build up during high-speed production.

    In such applications, static elimination, grounding and suitable roller configurations should be considered together with the cutting system.

    This is why CHM does not treat every project as simply choosing a machine model from a catalogue.

The Right Machine Starts With the Paper

    There is no single “best” paper sheeter for every material.

    A customer processing 80gsm copy paper has very different requirements from a converter producing 350gsm coated board. 

A kraft paper producer may care most about heavy-duty stability, while a premium printer may be more concerned with sheet accuracy and surface protection.

    Before recommending a machine, CHM looks at the actual production requirements:

  • Paper type.
    Paper weight.
    Roll width and diameter.
    Required sheet size.
    Production speed.
    Cutting accuracy.
    Final application.
